Assessing value

Key points for high purchase appraisal

Author and subject

Generally, hanging scrolls have the signature of the artist written inside the work. The more famous the artist, the higher the purchase price. Also, artists often have subjects they are good at, and the more expensive the subject, the higher the purchase price.

Authenticity of the item

Famous artists have forgeries, or counterfeits. The most important point in the appraisal is whether the work is genuine or counterfeit. Some modern famous artists have their own appraisal agencies. If you have an appraisal certificate, please be sure to bring it with you.

Stains, dirt

作品にシミや汚れがある場合はマイナスポイントとなります。保存状態が良く、オリジナルに近いほど高価に査定ができます

Presence or absence of box

Hanging scrolls are placed in a paulownia wood box, and the artist writes the title of the painting and their name on the box in ink. This is called a shared box. A shared box will increase the appraisal value, so if you are selling a scroll that is hanging in a tokonoma alcove, please make sure it does not come with a box.
